How Much Space Should Be Between Bar Stools?

As a general rule, allow approximately 6–10 inches of space between bar stools, measured from the edge of one seat to the edge of the next. This gives each person enough room to sit comfortably and makes it easier to get in and out without bumping into the person beside them. For most standard bar stools, planning for approximately 24–30 inches of total space per stool is a good starting point.

The exact amount of space you need depends on the size and style of the stool. Narrow or backless stools can usually be placed closer together, while wider stools and stools with backs or arms benefit from additional room. Swivel bar stools should also have extra clearance so the seat can rotate comfortably without hitting the stool next to it or interfering with another person. When determining how many stools will fit at your bar or counter, consider the stool's overall width as well as how it functions. A little extra space between stools will almost always provide a more comfortable seating area than trying to fit the maximum number of stools into the available space.
